Do you suffer from Hormonal Migraines?

May 16, 20233 min read

Hormonal headaches, also known as menstrual migraines or hormone-related headaches, are headaches that occur in relation to hormonal fluctuations in the menstrual cycle. These headaches are primarily experienced by women and are linked to changes in hormone levels, particularly estrogen.

Here are some key points about hormonal headaches:

  1. Timing: Hormonal headaches typically occur in relation to hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle. They often occur in the days leading up to menstruation (premenstrual phase) and may continue into the early days of the menstrual period. Some women may also experience headaches around the time of ovulation.

  2. Estrogen fluctuations: Fluctuations in estrogen levels, specifically a decline in estrogen, are thought to be a significant trigger for hormonal headaches. Estrogen plays a role in regulating pain perception and blood vessel dilation, and its decline can affect the stability of blood vessels and trigger headache symptoms.

  3. Characteristics: Hormonal headaches can resemble migraines and may be accompanied by throbbing pain, sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, and sometimes aura symptoms. The severity and duration of the headaches can vary among individuals.

  4. Triggers: In addition to hormonal fluctuations, hormonal headaches can be triggered or exacerbated by other factors such as stress, lack of sleep, certain foods or food additives, caffeine, alcohol, and environmental factors.

  5. Treatment: Managing hormonal headaches involves a combination of preventive measures and acute treatment options. Preventive strategies may include lifestyle modifications such as stress reduction techniques, regular exercise, healthy sleep patterns, and dietary changes. Hormonal treatments, such as hormonal contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, may also be considered under medical guidance. Acute treatments for relieving pain during headache episodes may include over-the-counter pain medications, prescription medications, and specific migraine medications known as triptans.

  6. Tracking and management: Keeping a headache diary or using a mobile app to track the timing, duration, and characteristics of headaches can help identify patterns and triggers specific to hormonal headaches. This information can assist healthcare providers in developing an individualized treatment plan.

If you experience recurrent or severe headaches associated with your menstrual cycle, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably a gynecologist or a headache specialist, for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. They can help determine if your headaches are hormonally related and guide you in developing a personalized treatment approach.

I am a migraine sufferer and have tried everything! For me, I discovered that my body can’t tolerate certain foods like dairy, gluten and tomatoes. Weather changes, lack of sleep, lack of exercise or too much exercise and hormonal changes had a significant impact on my migraines. I had to customize what worked for me.

What initially helped me the most was a combination of typical treatments such as migraine medications in conjunction with holistic approaches.

Honestly, what impacted me the most, was realizing that emotional trauma and feeling dysregulated had a significant impact on my weekly if not daily head pain. When I started to work on calming down my nervous system and repairing years of bad habits with healthy habits, I started to heal from the inside out. These holistics approaches are a great start, but true healing will demand repairing our nervous system.

If your nervous system is dysregulated and you want to see if regulating would have an impact on your headaches, then consider working with me.

I have created a unique 12-step Program that helps individuals transform from the inside out to give you that solid foundation you deserve. This system helps you regulate your nervous system, increase self love and begin to heal.
