What are Migraine Headaches?

May 16, 20233 min read

Migraine headaches are a type of neurological disorder characterized by recurrent, severe headaches that are typically accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and in some cases, visual disturbances.

The exact cause of migraines is not yet fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic and environmental factors that affect the brain and its blood vessels. Triggers for migraines can vary from person to person and may include stress, certain foods or drinks, changes in sleep patterns, hormonal fluctuations, and environmental factors such as bright lights, loud noises, or strong odors.

Migraines can last anywhere from a few hours to several days and can significantly impact a person's quality of life. Treatment options for migraines may include medications to manage pain and other symptoms, lifestyle changes to avoid triggers, and preventive medications to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.

Types of Migraine headaches are:

There are several types of migraine headaches, including:

  1. Migraine without aura: This is the most common type of migraine and is characterized by a moderate to severe headache that is typically felt on one side of the head, along with other symptoms such as nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and fatigue.

  2. Migraine with aura: This type of migraine is similar to a migraine without aura, but is also accompanied by visual disturbances, such as seeing flashing lights or zigzag lines, or temporary vision loss.

  3. Chronic migraine: Chronic migraine is diagnosed when a person experiences a headache on at least 15 days per month for at least three months, with at least eight of those headaches being migraines.

  4. Menstrual migraine: Some women experience migraines that are related to their menstrual cycle, typically occurring in the days leading up to or during their period.

  5. Vestibular migraine: Vestibular migraines are characterized by dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems, in addition to the typical migraine symptoms.

  6. Hemiplegic migraine: Hemiplegic migraines are a rare type of migraine that can cause temporary paralysis on one side of the body, in addition to the other typical migraine symptoms.

  7. Cluster Migraine: Cluster headaches, also known as "cluster migraines," are a type of headache that are characterized by severe, sharp pain that is typically felt on one side of the head. They are called "cluster" headaches because they tend to occur in clusters, with several headaches occurring over a period of weeks or months, followed by a period of remission.

It's important to note that the symptoms and severity of migraines can vary widely from person to person, and some people may experience multiple types of migraines. If you are experiencing frequent or severe headaches, it's important to speak with a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

I am a migraine sufferer and have tried everything! What initially helped me the most was a combination of typical treatments in conjunction with holistic approaches.

However, what impacted me the most, was realizing that emotional trauma was connected to my weekly if not daily head pain. When I started to work on calming down my nervous system and replacing years of bad habits with healthy habits, I started to heal from the inside out.

If your nervous system is dysregulated and you want to see if regulating would have an impact on your headaches, then consider working with me.

I have created a unique 12-step Program that helps individuals transform from the inside out to give you that solid foundation you deserve. This system helps you regulate your nervous system, increase self love and begin to heal.
